United People’s Freedom Alliance National Organizer Janaka Bandara Tennakoon said that the party will take a decision on keeping Wimal Weerawansa’s National Freedom Front as a part of UPFA further.
Speaking to a local newspaper, Tennakoon asserted that Weerawansa was trying to split the UPFA and SLFP by challenging President Sirisena.
“The president is now the leader of both SLFP and UPFA. So everyone must support him. Challenging him publically won’t help us to make the party and the alliance stronger” he said.
Weerawansa may be thinking that he can force the president to act according to his whims, but it was nothing more than a big joke, Tennakoon said.
Meanwhile in a recent TV interview, opposition leader Nimal Siripala de Silva said that NFF is not a partner in the UPFA. The NFF only contests elections under the UPFA ticket, de Silva added.
Weerawansa is a staunch supporter of former president Mahinda Rajapaksa and a strong critic of the current government of President Maithripala Sirisena.
Sirisena was appointed UPFA Chairman at the Central Working Committee meeting on March 15.
