Elections Commissioner Mahinda Deshapriya is to meet party leaders including Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe on Monday (30) afternoon to discuss a set of proposals to reform electoral process.
Accordingly, the number of the parliamentary seats will be increased to 250. Single member constituencies will elect 140 members while 80 members will be selected through a District based proportional representation system. The national list will have 30 members.
Since there are 160 constituencies in the island at present, delimitation should be done to re-draw the electoral map to include the new 140 electorates. This process will be kicked off if the party leaders agree to the proposed new system.
A further meeting is expected on April 6 between party leaders.
The changed system will be introduced to the parliament as the 20th Constitutional Amendment, if the party leaders are able to arrive at a consensus on it.
