Government is not interfering in the investigations on the controversial Treasury bond issue by Central Bank of Sri Lanka, Minister of Finance Ravi Karunanayaka stated.
In an interview with BBC ‘Sandeshaya’ on Monday, the minister further stressed that all investigations are done according to the law and nobody will be able to question the transparency of these investigations.
National Freedom Front (NFF) leader Wimal Weerawansa recently alleged that although Arjuna Mahendran is on leave, he still makes decisions as the governor of the Central Bank.
Karunanayake firmly refuted Weerawansa’s statement and said that the opposition has a ‘mental problem’. Since they cannot find any instance of corruption in the new government, the opposition tries to spread false news, he added.
Governor of Central Bank Arjuna Mahendran was alleged to have been involved in an insider dealing during the issue of Treasury bonds. It is alleged that a company connected to his son-in-law profited in the deal.
President Maithripala Sirisena ordered the President’s secretary to appoint a three-member committee to investigate into this issue.
Later Prime Minister Ranil Wickremasinghe informed parliament that Central Bank Governor Arjuna Mahendran was on leave until the Bond Issue investigations are concluded.
