Businessman Ravi Wettasinghe was released on Tuesday (31) on a surety of Rs. 100,000 and another two sureties of Rs.1 million each by the Colombo High Court today.
The Attorney General had indicted Ravi Wettasinghe for swindling a company director named Don Anthony Rohan Mallawaarachchi of Rs.10 million after promising him to provide a house in Nawala area on or around September 16, 2005.
The case was heard without the accused being present for several years.
Wettasinghe was arrested by Immigration officials at the Bandaranaike International Airport on Febriary 20 whilst attempting to leave the country for Dubai.
He was then handed over to the Katunayake Police and was later produced before the Negombo Magistrates Courts.
Wettasinghe became the Chairman of Wesco, after he bought over the CTB’s Werahera Central Workshop for Rs. 25 million in 1993. The controversial entrepreneur fled the country amidst certain financial crisis within the bus company leaving the government to pay Rs.460 million as salaries for the employees.
