Former President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga ruled out entry into electoral politics, terming it as ‘ugly.’
In a recent interview with ‘The Hindu’, she added that a section among the international community was insisting that she consider her return. When asked about her son’s decision, she added that “I don’t want to speak for my son but I definitely will not come into electoral politics. I think it is very ugly.”
There had been speculations of her son Vimukthi Kumaranatunga’s entry to politics.
Speaking on the former regime of Mahinda Rajapaksa, Kumaratunga said that it was a police state. People voted Rajapaksa out mainly for his bad governance, “his family’s corruption, the lack of human rights and some murders and the lack of freedom overall” she said.
Kumaratunga, who was recently invited to head a special presidential task force on reconciliation, told ‘The Hindu’ that the government’s efforts to promote national unity in Sri Lanka will break down unless there is reconciliation.
