The Marine police of the Coastal Security Group (CSG) in India have apprehended two Sri Lankan Tamil refugees when one of them tried to clandestinely leave for Sri Lanka from Pamban near Ramanathapuram in Tamil Nadu.

Acting on a tip-off, the Marine police team, led by Sub-Inspector of Police Jothi Basu, apprehended R. Jigendra (30) and his brother-in-law, J. Ignatius George (39), The Hindu reported.

Basu had made arrangements with a local fisherman to ferry him to Talaimannar on Tuesday night.

Enquiries revealed that Jigendra, a native of Trincomalee, who arrived here in 2006 and registered as refugee at Bavanisagar camp in Erode district, wanted to leave for the island nation to visit his pregnant wife.

After coming to India, he wanted to return home for his marriage in 2013, but could not get a passport, pending police clearance. As he could not go, his fiancée flew down and got married to him in June last year and left for Trincomalee in September after she became pregnant, the police said.

After the Q Branch police checked their antecedents and found that they had proper documents and registration papers, they were let off with a warning.

The family members arrived at Pamban and received them, the police added. Ignatius George was staying at KK Nagar in Tiruchi after registering with the local police.
