During a closed door discussion between President Maithripala Sirisena and Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe last night, the Prime Minister had asked the President to deliver the numbers and ensure the implementation of the 19th Amendment.
The meeting was held following the Cabinet meeting last evening, which was attended by Cabinet members of the United National Party and the Sri Lanka Freedom Party.
During the Cabinet meeting, nothing was discussed about the contentious matters with regard to the 19th Amendment which has already been presented to the Parliament.
Cabinet members adhered to the agenda of the meeting and refrained from making any reference to the proposed constitutional amendment or electoral reforms.
At the one-to-one meeting between President and Prime Minister, Wickremesinghe had asked President Sirisena to get everyone in SLFP on the same stage about the constitutional amendment.
As the party which holds the majority of seats in parliament, the SLFP should play its role in bringing about much needed constitutional reforms that leads to democratization of the society, the Prime Minister had said.
In response, President Sirisena had promised to discuss the matter with the Central Committee of the party and resolve the present crisis, highly placed political sources told Asian Mirror.
