The Supreme Court has determined that the 19th Amendment is consistent with the constitution, Speaker Chamal Rajapaksa informed Parliament today. However, Supreme Court has determined that certain sections require a referendum, the Speaker informed further.
In response, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe told parliament that the sections which require a referendum will be removed from the proposed 19th Amendment.
A three member bench of the Supreme Court headed by Chief Justice K Sripavan finished hearing the petitions on the 19th Amendment on April 6 and sent the secret report to the Speaker. There were 19 petitions filed on the 19 th Amendment. Among the petitioners were the Jathika Hela Urumaya, Udaya Gammanpila of Pivithuru Hela Urumaya and senior Attorney-at-Law Gomin Dayasri.
