The United States said that the "extraordinary" positive change in Sri Lanka over the past several months presents a renewed opportunity for the people of the island nation to unite for reconciliation and peace.
Offering Sinhala and Tamil New Year greetings to the "people of Sri Lanka and the vibrant global Sri Lankan diaspora," on behalf of President Obama and the people of the United States, the Secretary of State John Kerry said this New Year is marked by the extraordinary positive change.
"This New Year is marked by the extraordinary positive change that has occurred in Sri Lanka over the past several months and represents a renewed opportunity for the people of Sri Lanka to join together in the spirit of reconciliation, tolerance, and peace," US Secretary of State said in a release.
"As you continue your work to build a prosperous, democratic, and united Sri Lanka, I offer my best wishes for a happy New Year and a peaceful year ahead," Kerry further said in his message.
