Sri Lanka Army extended the amnesty period granted for deserters, enabling them to receive their legal discharge from service.
Army spokesman Brigadier Jayanath Jayaweera said on Wednesday that the amnesty period was extended to April 25.
The Army announed a two week amnesty period on April 2 and it was to end on Thursday (16).
Army spokesman stated that 12,060 deserters had returned to their respective regimental headquarters for their legal discharge.
Brigadier Jayaweera recently told Asian Mirror that the army expected most of the returnees would report before the Sinhala/Hindu New Year.
