Former JVP leader Somawansa Amarasinghe on Tuesday (21) revealed that JVP was not willing to force the government in speeding up the investigations on election night ‘coup attempt.’
Speaking to Asian Mirror, he said that he was willing to conduct a hunger strike to force the government speed up the investigations but the party did not take it seriously.
Amarasinghe added that JVP should have been the first party to complain on the issue to the CID. However, once the complaint was made by Minister Mangala Samaraweera, JVP should have added pressure to speed up investigations, Amarasinghe said.
He said that since the party was not interested, he decided to launch a hunger strike at the Independent Square. He informed the Presidential Secretariat on his decision on the same day he was to launch the hunger strike, Amarasinghe said. However, several reasons forced him to stop the attempt, he added.
The party did not respond favorably, and did not add value to his suggestion, Amarasinghe further said.
The veteran JVP leader resigned from the party on April 16, saying that the party is intentionally delaying the process of building socialism in the country.
Speaking to local media recently, Amarasinghe told that he was preparing to establish a new party in the near future. He further stated that he was forming a new party to guide the JVP in the correct path.
