Sri Lanka's former president Mahinda Rajapaksa Wednesday accused the new government of spying on his family and said his own security chief and even his food taster had betrayed him.

Rajapaksa said his security unit headed by Senior DIG S. M. Wickramasinghe had been passing on information about his activities to political opponents in the run up to the January 8 election that he lost.

"The PSD and the head of the PSD has been (figuratively) cutting my neck (bella kapuwa)," Rajapakse said in an interview with the French news agency AFP today.

"Even my tea taster, the man who used to taste my meals, had also betrayed me."

There was no immediate comment from DIG Wickramasinghe who is now the head of President Maithripala Sirisena's security unit.

Rajapaksa said information about leaks came to light from statements of members of the current administration.

He said he had trusted his personal staff too much and regretted failing to take action against some of his corrupt ministers.

He said his second son Yoshitha, who is a navy officer, was now being followed by state intelligence services.

Yoshitha has been implicated in several cases, including an investigation into the affairs of the CSN television network.
