President Maithripala Sirisena met with several diplomats on Wednesday and assured them that the parliament will not be dissolved on April 23, as stated in the 100 Days Program.
He expressed confidence that the 19th Amendment will be passed in the parliament, despite the difficulties that have arisen. He added that he had long hours of discussions with the members of Parliament during the last three days to break the political deadlock.
Parliament will only be dissolved after the approval of the 19th Amendment, he said.
Meeting with diplomats of Germany, UK and USA, he informed them of the progress of the 100 Days Program.
The diplomats extended fullest support to President Maithripala Sirisena’s policies to strengthen democracy and eliminate bribery and corruption.
In his discussions with Deputy High Commissioner of UK Laura Davies, Sirisena discussed on the GSP+ issue and other economic matters. Davies said that three teams from the United Kingdom would arrive next month to Sri Lanka to discuss, investments, defense cooperation and assistance to the Commission on Bribery and Corruption.
President Sirisena is due to meet Chinese and Russian envoys on Thursday. He is to address the nation later in the evening.
