Opposition Leader Nimal Siripala de Silva came up with a fresh argument in Parliament, a short while ago, stating that the majority of members of the proposed Constitutional Council, should be MPs representing the legislature.
The Constitutional Council proposed by the 19th Amendment was designed to be an independent body. All the key appointment coming under the 19th Amendment to the constitution will be handled by the Constitutional Council.
"When MPs form the majority of the Constitutional Council, political parties will be able to influence appointments and that will dilute the whole process," a constitutional expert, who spoke to 'Asian Mirror', explained. He added that the Constitutional Council should function as an independent body without being influenced by political parties.
Following the argument raised by the Opposition Leader, President Maithripala Sirisena today appointed a committee of Parliamentarians to discuss the matter and arrive at a settlement. The Attorney General was appointed by the President as the main 'arbitrator' of the committee.
