Cabinet Spokesman Dr. Rajitha Senaratne on Wednesday stated that the government managed to defeat many attempts to scuttle 19th Amendment. Adding that both J.R. Jayawardena, who introduced the executive presidency and Mahinda Rajapaksa were defeated on Tuesday.

"Both JR and MR were defeated," he quipped.

Addressing a press briefing, he further stated that all parties have arrived at a certain consensus on electoral reforms. Senaratne expressed belief that the parliament will approve the 20th Amendment to the Constitution which will introduce electoral reforms.

However, at a different press briefing, Opposition Leader Nimal Siripala de silva said that the SLFP was puzzled at the lack of interest by the UNP to implement electoral reforms.
