Sinnathambi Uthaya Sri, the 19 year old girl from Batticaloa, who was jailed for two years for scribbling on the mirror wall at Sigiriya, was released from Anuradhapura prison this morning.
Uthaya was arrested on February 14 for writing on the Mirror Wall. Dambulla Magistrate Court later sentenced her for two years imprisonment.
President Maithripala Sirisena decided to pardon Uthaya Sri on April 1, after considering the recommendation of Justice Minister Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe.
However, she was not released immediately since her side had filed an appeal at the courts. Her lawyers had withdrawn the appeal on Tuesday, making her release possible.
Deputy Ministers Ranjan Ramanayake and Ajith P Perera also urged the president to pardon Uthaya. Meanwhile, State Minister Nandimithra Ekanayake also wrote to the president, seeking her pardon.
