National Freedom Front leader UPFA MP Wimal Weerawansa vehemently condemned the attack on Inter University Bikku Front protest on Wednesday near the University Grants Commission and demanded the government to stop such deplorable acts and deliver its promises.
Releasing a statement, Weerawansa asked if the ‘good governance’ government was responding with water cannons and tear gas when it is reminded of its promises.
Weerawansa added that the student community has a right to protest when the administrators turn a blind eye to their just demands. The government, which promised to deliver sweeping reforms and concessions within a hundred days, has not solved the problems of the universities. On top of it, the government is attacking peaceful protests, Weerawansa said.
He also added that the government has implemented only eight out of the 100 concessions to the people in its first 100 days in government. Increasing the enrolment of Buddhist monks to universities was also a promise of the government’s program, Weerawansa also said.
