Bangladesh open batsmen Tamim Iqbal and Imrul Kayes broke a 55-year-old record for the best first wicket partnership in a second innings of a Test cricket match in the First Test against Pakistan at Sheikh Abu Nasser Stadium in Khulna.
Iqbal and Kayes started the innings with their team facing the daunting prospect of saving the game against a good Pakistani bowling attack. Bangladesh trailed by 296 runs with five sessions remaining. However, Iqbal and Kayes started hammering Pakistan bowlers, ending Day 4 at 273 for no wickets. On Day 5, they continued the marathon partnership, surpassing the record for the first wicket Test partnership in the process. The Bangladesh openers passed the record 290 put on by Colin Cowdrey and Geoff Pullar against South Africa in 1960.
Kayes lost his wicket for 150, which he put on in just 240 balls faced. The partnership thus ended at 312. When rain stopped play a short while ago, Bangladesh team was at 315 for 1. Tamim Iqbal remains unbeaten on 159.
