TNA MP M.A. Sumanthiran stated that the 19th Amendment was an important step towards the establishment of good governance in the country.
He made this observation on Monday addressing a meeting of the Ilankai Thamil Arasu Kachchi (ITAK), the main constituent party of the TNA, in Vavuniya.
Sumanthiran stated that TNA supported President Maithripala Sirisena during the recent presidential election, believing in his commitment to carry out his promises. Acknowledging that good governance cannot be established overnight, Sumanthiran hailed the 19th Amendment as a step towards it.
Sumanthiran took an active part in the negotiations between the government and the SLFP on the 19th amendment as he was a member of the committee appointed by president Sirisena on april 27 to discuss on the differences in opinion. However, president Sirisena had to step in at the eleventh hour to ensure the SLFP supported the 19th Amendment.
