Cabinet Spokesman Dr. Rajitha Senaratne stated that the Local Government Bodies will be dissolved from May 15.

He made this observation at a recent meeting in Beruwela.

Most of the local government bodies are now controlled by the UPFA. It was reported that the leaders of these bodies have asked the government to extend their terms.

The new government in late March decided to extend the terms of 234 local government bodies till 15 and 31 May this year.

The government earlier decided to place local government bodies under a special commissioner for a period of one year, upon dissolution. However, this decision was greeted with disapproval by several political leaders.
