Former Economic Development Minister Basil Rajapaksa was brought to the Kaduwela Magistrate Courts this morning.

Rajapaksa was arrested by police Financial Crimes Investigations Division on April 22 under Offenses Against Public Property Act. He was produced before the Kaduwela Magistrate on the same night along with former Secretary to the Economic development Ministry Dr. Nihal Jayatillake and Director General of Divi Naguma Project R.A.A.K. Ranawaka.

They were remanded until May 5 by the Kaduwela Magistrate on April 22. Rajapaksa was admitted to the Colombo National Hospital on April 23.

Although bail is not given for those arrested under the Offenses Against Public Property Act, Rajapaksa’s lawyers had earlier argued for bail under exceptional circumstances, since he was under medication. The lawyers are expected to repeat this request again.
