Sri Lanka Falls Three Positions In World Mothers' Index

Save the Children’s 16th annual State of the World’s Mothers Report ranked Sri Lanka at 92nd place, three positions below from the last year's report.

The report highlighted how maternal deaths and child mortality in the most challenging parts of the world can be dramatically cut when efforts are made to improve services for mothers and children.

According to the report among 179 countries Sri Lanka is the best place to be a mother in South Asian region.

Both Sri Lanka and Maldives were ranked at 92th place in the World’s Mother’s Index.

However Sri Lanka was ranked at 89th place last year.

Women in Sri Lanka face a 1 in 1,400 risk of maternal death, the report revealed.

Nepal was ranked 114, Bhutan at 122 and Bangladesh at 130 in the index. India ranked far behind at 140 and Pakistan was at 149. Afghanistan was ranked at 152.

The top five countries for mothers are Norway, Finland, Iceland, Denmark and Sweden according to the mother’s index.
