Sri Jayawardenapura Kotte Mayor Janaka Ranawaka was arrested by police on a complaint that he had assaulted the opposition leader of the Municipal Council Sugath Appuhami.

Police Media Unit told Asian Mirror that he was arrested while undergoing treatment at Kalubowila Hospital and is still being kept at the hospital premises.

The alleged assault took place on Thursday during a protest by Appuhami, who alleged that there was blatant corruption taking place in the municipal council. Appuhami filed a complaint at the Bribery Commission against Ranawaka few weeks ago.

Following the assault, Appuhami was admitted to the Colombo National Hospital.
