United People's Freedom Alliance General Secretary Susil Premajayantha stated that the party decided to make a request from President Maithripala Sirisena to extend the terms of 234 Local Government bodies that will complete their tems on May 15.

Premajayantha told media that the elections for these LG bodies will have to take place under the new electoral system. However, the electoral system needs time for implementation. In the case of LG bodies, delimitation will need some time, Premajayantha pointed out.

If the LG bodies are to be dissolved, they will have to be put under the administration of a Commissioner until elections are held, Premajayantha further said. Such a step will be contrary to the democratic rights of the people, he added.

Cabinet Spokesman Dr. Rajitha Senaratne said recently that the LG bodies will be dissolved on May 15.
