If the proposed electoral system does not cause any damage to the unitary state and reconciliation among communities, Jathika Hela Urumaya (JHU) will not oppose it, its spokesperson Nishantha Sri Warnasinghe said.
Addressing a press briefing on Friday (15), Warnasighe further stated that four factors must be considered when forming a new electoral system.
“We agree that the present voting system must be cancelled. Also, the new electoral system must not influence separation among communities,” he stressed.
Furthermore it should be fair towards minor parties and minor communities, he added, and said the main point should be selecting a suitable representative for each parliament seat.
Warnasinghe also said that certain people and parties are trying to achieve their personal goals through the 20th Amendment.
“What should be considered in the first place is our country, not parties and our personal goals” he asserted.
