UPFA General Secretary Susil Premajayantha said that the government should carry out delimitation of the Local Government bodies and hold their elections as soon as possible.

He made this observation speaking to local media on the government’s decision to bring 234 Local Government bodies under the purview of special commissioners. The UPFA and Sri Lanka Freedom Party oppose the decision.

The term of 3 Municipal Councils, 30 Urban Councils and 201 Pradeshiya Sabhas ended with effect from last night. UPFA controlled 207 of these 234 LG bodies.

Elections for these LG bodies should be held within a year. The government recently indicated that it plans to hold the elections in all LG bodies after the terms of the remaining bodies also expire later this year.
