Justice L.K. Wimalachandra, a Commissioner of the Bribery Commission, resigned with effect from Friday (15).
Wimalachandra, a former judge of the Appeals Court, resigned to allow the appointing of new commissions in line with the 19th amendment which came to force on Friday.
As per the 19th Amendment, independent commissions should be appointed by the Constitutional Council established under the constitution. The 19th Amendment became operational after the Speaker signed the blueprint of the amendment on Friday.
Under the circumstances, the commission can continue its investigations but cannot file actions.
