The Cabinet subcommittee report on the 20th Amendment to the Constitution, is expected to be presented to the Cabinet today.
The Cabinet was expected to give its approval to the 20th Amendment, which introduces electoral reforms, on May 13. However, due to opposition by various quarters including smaller political parties, the Cabinet decided to defer the decision on the Bill by one week.
A Cabinet subcommittee was appointed to hold discussions with smaller parties and other groups on the matter. The subcommittee held several discussions last week and met with the President and the Prime Minister on May 18.
President Maithripala Sirisena is expected to dissolve the parliament after the 20th Amendment is approved. However, the next general election is likely to be held under the present electoral system. The next election for Local Government Bodies is likely to be the first election to be held under the new system.
