Former Minister and leader of the National Freedom Front Wimal Weerawansa appeared at the CID to give a statement on the issue regarding his wife’s passport, Police Media Unit told Asian Mirror.
Weerawansa's wife Shashi Weerawansa was arrested in February over the charges of obtaining a diplomatic passport in an illegal manner, after providing forged documents. She was later released on bail.
Sashi Weerawansa is alleged to have obtained diplomatic and general passports by submitting birth certificate with forged names and dates of birth. She had applied for a diplomatic passport in 2010 by submitting false personal information which was different to what appears in her previous normal passport that expired on May 24, 2009.
Colombo Crimes Division on May 15 informed court that the passport and National Identity Card of Sashi Weerawansa are forgeries.
