Police stated that peace has retuned to Jaffna following several days of protest and another escalation of violence in highly unlikely.
Speaking to Asian Mirror, Police Spokesman ASP Ruwan Gunasekara said that the IGP is currently in Jaffna, giving instructions on the investigations into the rape and murder of the schoolgirl in Punguditivu. The investigations are being carried out by the CID.
The IGP visited Jaffna yesterday too.
Meanwhile, lawyers in Jaffna have decided to stay away from courts today in protest over the attack on Jaffna Magistrate Courts.
Protests turned violent on May 20 in Jaffna when protesters attacked the Jaffna Courts, damaging its buildings and several vehicles. Five policemen were injured in the clashes and 130 protesters were arrested. Hartal campaigns were carried out across several cities in the Northern Province, demanging death penalty to alleged rapists.
Gunasekara said that police had arrested 60 motorcycles, 43 cycles and 5 three-wheelers which belonged to those who took part in the protests in Jaffna on May 20. These vehicles will also be released after thorough investigations, he added.
