Sri Lankan Republic Was Saved In January Polls, Says Mano Ganesan

Tamil Progressive Alliance leader Mano Ganesan said that the Sri Lankan Republic was saved by the result of the 2015 Presidential Election since the country was moving towards being effectively a monarchy.

Taking part in the "Sangramaya" political talk show on Swarnavahini last night, he said that the most important achievement of the present government was the establishment of a sense of freedom. Political freedom was largely curtailed under the Rajapaksa government, he added.

Ganesan also said that former president Mhinda Rajapaksa was misleading people through his statements. He pointed out that "Eelamists" did not vote to defeat Rajapaksa. Hard-line "Eelamists" called for a boycott of the presidential polls but the Tamil people overwhelmingly ignored their calls, Ganesan pointed out. He pointed out that it was a defeat of the extremist elements in the Tamil community.
