Speaker of Parliament Dr. Ashoka Ranwala plans to hold discussions with MP Dr. Archchuna Ramanathan following his recent controversial behavior during the inaugural session of the 10th Parliament.
On November 21, a video of the independent MP refusing to vacate the Leader of the Opposition’s seat despite repeated requests from parliamentary staff went viral on social media. The incident, coupled with comments made by the MP on his social media platforms, has sparked widespread public criticism.
Speaking to media in Kandy on November 24, the Speaker condemned the incident and highlighted the need for unity in the current political climate.
“We do not fully understand his personal objectives, but the aspirations of the people he represents are clear. The public does not condone such behavior, especially at a time when citizens from all regions seek unity and progress for the country,” the Speaker stated.
He said that the matter would be addressed sensitively, “We will review his actions and social media statements, engage in dialogue, and take necessary action accordingly," he added.
