While President Maithripala Sirisena is pushing hard to form a Caretaker Government with the Rajapaksa-led Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna, Basil Rajapaksa, the Chief Ideologue of the SLPP today said the people's mandate was needed to form a government.
The former Minister's statement is a sign that the Sri Lanka Podujana Permuna has decided to tread cautiously on the President's idea to form a Careraker Government.
"SLPP National Organizer Basil Rajapaksa says although there are several ways to topple a Government, the People's mandate is needed to establish a Government: Asserts the SLPP will convincingly win all forthcoming Elections, " SLPP tweeted.
The former Minister's statement was an indication that the SLPP's preference was to form a government following a fresh General election.
Basil Rajapaksa was present at the meeting held between Presidnet Maithripala Sirisena and former President Mahidna Rajapaksa, last Wednesday, at the residence of Parliamentarian S.B. Dissanayake.
Sources close to the Rajapaksa family said the former Presidnet had not given a final word to President Sirisena on whether or not his party was willing to enter into a Caretaker Government.
