The Indian women’s cricket team reportedly refused to accept the Asia Cup trophy from Asian Cricket Council (ACC) President Mohsin Naqvi after defeating Sri Lanka in Sunday’s final in Dubai.
India secured a 72-run victory over Sri Lanka to claim the Women’s Asia Cup title for the eighth time.
The presentation ceremony was reportedly delayed by nearly 50 minutes. The Sri Lankan team accepted its runners-up cheque from Naqvi before receiving medals from Sri Lanka Cricket Interim Chairman Eran Wickramaratne.
India Head Coach Amol Muzumdar said the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) had decided that the team would not accept the trophy from Naqvi, who also serves as Pakistan’s Interior Minister and Cricket Board Chairman.
“For us, this tournament is over, we are the champions. That’s good for us,” Muzumdar told reporters.
“It was on the big board that India are the champions of Asia Cup 2026. This tournament is officially over for us. We’re happy that we’re the champions and we look forward to the Asian Games.”
The BCCI had informed the ACC in advance that the team would not accept the trophy from Naqvi, according to reports.
A similar controversy arose in September 2025 when the Indian men’s team refused to accept the Asia Cup trophy from Naqvi amid heightened political tensions between India and Pakistan following the Pahalgam attack and Operation Sindoor.
