President Anura Kumara Dissanayake presented the Vishishta Seva Vibhushana medal to 57 serving and retired senior officers of the Army, Navy and Air Force at the Presidential Secretariat today.
The officers were recognised for their distinguished and dedicated service in the regular forces.
Addressing the ceremony, the President said the recipients had made an exceptional contribution to the country and its people, fulfilling their duties under all circumstances.
He said they had served day and night, in favourable and adverse weather, and even when their lives were at risk. The country needed a public service marked by the same dedication and accountability, he added.
Established by Presidential proclamation, the Vishishta Seva Vibhushana is awarded to officers of the three Armed Forces who have completed at least 25 years of continuous service and maintained a commendable service record.
