Minister Gayantha Karunatilleke says Speaker Karu Jayasuriya acts independent and impartially in parliament. His role in the House is fully democratic. However, the joint opposition is attempting to grab political power by disrupting parliamentary proceedings. Some media institutions also spread false information regarding an impeachment on the Speaker. Minister Katunatilleke pointed out that there will be no such move to oust the Speaker.
Deputy minister Karunaratne Paranavithana said no individual who upholds democracy will approve the behaviors of the joint opposition members. They have acted maliciously against the Speaker during the past period. Joining the cabinet press briefing deputy minister Ajith P. Perera said the government has not agreed to set up a UN human rights office in Colombo.
There is no need for such office in Sri Lanka as the Sri Lankan law enforcement bodies are independent, impartial and efficient to mete justice. Sri Lanka’s measures to protect human rights have been praised by the international community.
