SJB Colombo District MP Dr. Harsha De Silva raised questions in Parliament regarding the civic rights of individuals labeled as "economic hitmen" following the recent Supreme Court decision. The SC ruling held former President Gotabhaya Rajapaksa, former Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa, former Finance Minister Basil Rajapaksa, and former CB Governor Ajith Nivaard Cabraal responsible for the economic crisis in Sri Lanka.

In his parliamentary address, Dr. Harsha De Silva criticized the imposition of taxes without detailing them in the budget speech. He highlighted the burden on the public, noting that an 18% Value Added Tax (VAT) has been levied on all health equipment.

Dr. Harsha De Silva expressed concern about the legality of the budget presentation, emphasizing the immediate needs of citizens, such as access to food, medication, and payment of utility bills. He cited World Bank reports indicating a significant increase in poverty in Sri Lanka, reaching 25% from 13%. Census data also reportedly confirms that over fifty-six percent of the country's population is living in poverty.

The MP urged a focus on addressing essential concerns, emphasizing the economic challenges faced by the majority of the population.
