58 Independent Groups Submit Deposits for Upcoming Parliamentary Elections

The National Election Commission has confirmed that 58 independent groups have submitted their deposits for the forthcoming parliamentary elections. The majority of these submissions have come from the districts of Batticaloa, Jaffna, Digamadulla, and Colombo.

Nominations for the elections will be accepted starting tomorrow and can be submitted until noon on November 11. This year, the Gampaha District will elect 19 members to parliament, an increase from 18 in 2020. In contrast, Colombo District will reduce its representation from 19 to 18 members.

The Kalutara District will see an increase to 11 members, while Jaffna District will decrease to 6 members. Other districts will maintain their current representation, with Ratnapura electing 11 members, Kandy 12, and Galle, Anuradhapura, Badulla, and Kegalle each electing 9 members. Nuwara Eliya and Puttalam will elect 8 members each, while Matara, Digamadulla, and Hambantota will each elect 7. Vanni and Monaragala will elect 6 members each, and Matale, Polonnaruwa, and Batticaloa will each elect 5 members.

Applications for postal voting are now open and will be accepted until November 8. The parliamentary elections are scheduled for November 14.
