A person who identified himself as the Media Spokesman of Chief Justice Mohan Peiris told reporters who were gathered at the Supreme Courts premises today that the Chief Justice did not hand over his letter of resignation.
“The Chief Justice is still in office,” Wijeratne Kodippili, the lawyer who spoke to media, said today.
Certain media reports today stated that Chief Justice Mohan Peiris handed over his letter of resignation to Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe on Tuesday (Jan. 21).
Such media reports came just hours after Cabinet Spokesman Rajitha Senaratne said that the Chief Justice had verbally informed Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe that he would step down from the position.
Immediately after the conclusion of presidential poll on Jan. 8, the Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL) urged Chief Justice Mohan Peiris to tender his resignation to preserve the honor and integrity of the judiciary.
