The pro-Mahinda Rajapaksa group is trying to destroy the proportional representation system in order to come to power through the Sinhalese vote, Nava Sama Samaja Party leader Dr. Wickramabahu Karunaratne said.
Speaking at a press conference yesterday, Karunaratne said that the first-past-the-post system will be more advantageous to the majority community. The Rajapaksa camp thinks that it could easily win the majority of the seats in the Sinhalese areas, thereby bringing them to power, he argued.
He added that it was vital to preserve the proportional system, with necessary changes.
