Fonseka Opposes 20th Amendment

Democratic Party leader Field Marshal Sarath Fonseka expressed his opposition to the 20th Amendment, saying that it will destroy small parties which are vital for the democracy of the country.

Speaking at an event in Kekirawa, he said that there was a sizeable vote share for the smaller parties of the country. However, if the new electoral reform is introduced, these parties will not get the due representation in parliament, he added.

Fonseka expressed hope that the President and the Prime Minister will understand this and change the proposed electoral system.

He also said that the electoral system should open chances to common people to enter parliament while reducing the chances to corrupt individuals or those with huge amounts of money to spend.
