President Maithripala Sirisena has agreed to offer a written assurance that former president Mahinda Rajapaksa will be appointed a National List MP in the next parliament, informed government sources told Asian Mirror.
This was the maximum Sirisena was willing to offer the Rajapaksa camp. At the moment, it is not known if Rajapaksa will agree to this.
Mahinda Rajapaksa had expressed his intention of contesting from either Ratnapura District or Kurunegala District. However, John Seneviratne had disagreed to Rajapaksa contesting from Ratnapura. Meanwhile, the possible friction with Dayasiri Jayasekara ruled out his nomination from Kurunegala District, sources said.
Rajapaksa also entertained the possibility of contesting from the Gampaha District. However, Sirisena has not agreed to this suggestion.
