The SLFP has commenced disciplinary action against its MPs Suren Raghavan and Shantha Bandara for getting involved in the government violating the party’s decisions.
The party has written to the duo for their response to the allegations against them. However they are yet to respond a party source said. Despite the SLFP says disciplinary action will be taken against them.
A possible imminent rift within the Sri Lanka Podujana Party (SLPP) is being reported. Accordingly, sources say the group led by MP Dullas Alahapperuma will split from the main SLPP and is set to function independently.
It is also reported another SLPP faction will join hands with the United National Party (UNP) in the coming days.
Meanwhile, it is also claimed the group led by Dullas Alahapperuma has decided to form a new political movement together with several political parties and groups. Political sources stated that the group led by Alahapperuma is currently in discussions with groups led by Wimal Weerawansa, Anura Priyadarshana Yapa and Patali Champika Ranawaka.
According to sources within the Dullas Alahapperuma group, this step has been taken to end nepotism and revolutionism to create a reformist political movement.
Meanwhile, sources said that many ministers who are with the government are preparing to join the UNP in the near future.
It is reported that MPs joining the government from Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna, Samagi Jana Balawegaya and Sri Lanka Freedom Party, as well as several people who left the government and became independent MPs in the recent past, are now prepared to join the UNP.
It is stated that this group will include several people who are currently representing the Cabinet.
The Sri Lanka Freedom Party is to take strong action against its MPs playing a key role in the 'Joint Opposition', formed by UPFA dissidents, party sources said.
They said that the party was considering the removal of such MPs from electorate organiser positions they are currently holding in the party. Accordingly, disciplinary action has already been considered against some SLFP MPs.
Several joint opposition MPs are functioning as electorate organizers of the SLFP while holding senior party positions. Some of the 'joint opposition' MPs however were removed from the party Central Committee by President Sirisena soon after the last Parliamentary election.
The joint opposition was a mechanism they adopted to back the political campaign of former President Mahinda Rajapaksa, deviating from President Sirisena's policies.
The 'Joint Opposition' has already declared its intention of contesting the upcoming Local Government Elections separately. President Maithripala Sirisena has decided to postpone the election, in an apparent attempt to resolve the power struggle within the SLFP.
Sri Lanka Freedom Party Secretary General Duminda Dissanayake said that several parties outside the UPFA were in discussions to contest the Local Government Elections.
Speaking to Asian Mirror, Dissanayake said that the SLFP has already discussed on contesting the LG Elections with several parties within the UPFA. He went on to say that all parties that held discussions have given a positive response.
Meanwhile, some parties outside the UPFA were also discussing on contesting under the alliance, he said. However, he added that he was unable to disclose any further details as the discussions were not yet finalized.
President Maithripala Sirisena has called for a Sri Lanka Freedom Party Central Committee meeting for tomorrow.
The meeting is to take place at the President's Official Residence.
It is expected that the meeting will focus on the local government elections and other future plans of the party.
Meanwhile, the SLFP All Island Committee Meeting is to be held later in the week.
The meeting is expected to be held on Friday.
The reorganization programme of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party is moving 'at a sail's pace' due to lack of response from some members of the reorganization committee, reports said.
A 20 member committee headed by former President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga was recently appointed to oversee the reorganization of the party. However, some members of the committee are reportedly not attending its meetings, making it hard to move forward.
SLFP Chairman President Maithripala Sirisena instructed that the party should be reorganized from grass-root level to ensure its victory in the upcoming local government polls, party sources said.
The UNP is still to consider the possibility of a power sharing agreement with the Sri Lanka Freedom Party at local government level, Deputy Minister Ajith P. Perera stated.
Speaking to Asian Mirror on Monday, Perera said that the UNP has still not discussed on such a move at local level. Furthermore, the party was still not aware of such a proposal coming from the SLFP, he added.
However, pointing out that the UNP and the SLFP has already formed such an agreement in the national level, Perera pointed out that an agreement on local government level is not impossible. "It might happen, it might not happen," he stated.
A spokesman of the SLFP told Asian Mirror on Sunday that the SLFP is considering the possibility of a power sharing agreement with the United National Party at the Local Government level.
"Irrespective of the outcome of the Local Government election, the two parties will join hands in running the administration of Local Government bodies," the spokesman also said.
The local government elections are expected to be held in March 2016.
Sri Lanka Freedom Party Dehiwela Electorate Chief Organizer Danasiri Amaratunga, who is a close ally of former president Mahinda Rajapaksa, has joined in congratulating President Maithripala Sirisena for protecting the dignity of war heroes.
Large cut-outs of the President was seen in Dehiwela with a congratulatory message, as part of a campaign by the SLFP in different parts of the country. However, unlike in other cases, the cut-outs in Dehiwela did not have an accompanying picture of the SLFP Organizer of the electorate.
While Sirisena’s allies have been commending on what they call diplomatic victories in New York and Geneva, Rajapaksa allies are accusing the President of betraying the country by co-sponsoring the UNHRC Resolution on Sri Lanka. Amaratunga’s public acknowledgement of Sirisena’s ‘success’ is interesting in this backdrop.
President Maithripala Sirisena is to meet SLFP Parliamentary team tomorrow, a day before the next session of Parliament, political reports said.
The Sri Lanka Freedom Party appointed a special committee to study the OHCHR Investigation on Sri Lanka (OISL) report which was released on September 16, the party General Secretary Duminda Dissanayake told media.
He said that this decision was taken yesterday evening at a Central Committee meeting of the SLFP.
The report of the committee is expected within the next few weeks.
Dissanayake also made it clear that the party came to a decision to protect all those who fought to defeat terrorism.
