Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardena highlighted the importance of the Sri Lanka Transport Board (SLTB) in the nation's economy, urging officials to work towards its development. Speaking at an induction program on Sunday, June 9, at Temple Trees, he highlighted the essential role SLTB plays in daily transportation for people and light goods, particularly in rural areas.
The event also marked the introduction of a new recruitment and promotion procedure for SLTB staff. Transport Minister Bandula Gunawardena announced a historic fixed system of promotions, aiming to end the practice of politically motivated job replacements following elections.
The Prime Minister reiterated the need to protect the SLTB, given that a significant portion of the public relies on bus transport. He recalled the SLTB's foundation in 1957 under his father, Philip Gunawardena, stressing its critical role in national development and daily commuting.
