Sri Lanka's Foreign Minister, Ali Sabry, met with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov on June 10 during the BRICS 2024 Foreign Ministerial Session. In the bilateral meeting, Sabry expressed concerns about Sri Lankan citizens who have joined the Russian Armed Forces and sought Lavrov's assistance in addressing their issues.

It was decided that a high-level Sri Lankan delegation, led by State Minister of Foreign Affairs Tharaka Balasuriya, will meet with the Deputy Minister of Defence of the Russian Federation on June 26-27 to review and take action on these matters. The ministers agreed to halt further recruitment from Sri Lanka into the Russian Armed Forces.
