Indian PM’s Visit to Address Indo-Lanka Fishing Dispute

The upcoming visit of the Indian Prime Minister and the Indian Minister of Foreign Affairs to Sri Lanka is expected to provide a platform for diplomatically addressing the long-standing Indo-Lanka fishing dispute, according to Fisheries Minister Douglas Devananda.

Speaking at a media briefing at the Presidential Media Centre on Tuesday, Minister Devananda highlighted the critical issues caused by Indian fishermen encroaching into Sri Lankan waters and using illegal fishing gear. These activities have significantly impacted the livelihoods of local Sri Lankan fishermen.

Minister Devananda noted that during President Ranil Wickremesinghe's recent visit to India, he discussed the matter with Indian authorities. He expressed optimism that the upcoming visits of the Indian leaders will be an opportunity to seek concrete solutions to the dispute.

In addition to diplomatic efforts, the Sri Lankan government is working on new legislation aimed at enhancing the fishing industry, protecting the interests of local fishing communities, and preserving marine resources.
