The Tamil Nadu Government has approved INR 300 million for the construction of new houses for Sri Lankan Tamil refugees at the Kottapattu camp on the Tiruchi-Pudukottai highway.
Kottapattu, one of Tamil Nadu's largest refugee camps, houses around 1,200 Sri Lankan refugees in 470 units. Many of these homes have fallen into disrepair due to age and poor maintenance, prompting the need for new construction.
The state’s Commissionerate of Rehabilitation and the Welfare of Non-Resident Tamils have responded to the urgent demands from camp residents and field reports indicating the dire condition of the existing houses. Over 500 new homes are planned, with the District Rural Development Agency (DRDA) overseeing the construction process.
Construction will occur near the current camp, with site identification underway. Refugees will remain in their current accommodations until the new houses are completed and ready for occupancy.
