The Meteorology Department says that a low-pressure area over the southwest Bay of Bengal is likely to intensify into a depression today (25). As of early morning, the system was located approximately 500 km southeast of Batticaloa and is expected to move closer to Sri Lanka’s east coast.
Cloudy skies are predicted across most parts of the island due to the system’s influence, with very heavy rainfall above 150 mm expected in parts of the Eastern Province. Rainfall exceeding 100 mm is also likely in the Northern, North-Central, Central, and Uva provinces, as well as in the Hambantota district.
Showers or thundershowers will occur at various times, particularly in the Northern, Eastern, Central, and Uva provinces. Coastal areas in the Western and North-Western provinces may experience rainfall during the morning, while other parts of the island are likely to see showers in the evening or night.
Additionally, fairly strong winds of 35-45 km/h are expected in the Northern, North-Central, and Eastern provinces, as well as in Hambantota.
