Government Discussing Possibility Of Dissolving Parliament

The government in discussing the possibility of dissolving the parliament at present, UNP General Secretary Minister Kabir Hashim stated.

Speaking to Asian Mirror, Hashim recalled that both government and opposition MPs had approved the move to dissolve the parliament during the special session on June 3. He also made it clear that even the Speaker had favored the move.

According to the 100 Days Program the parliament should have been dissolved weeks ago, Hashim also said.

President Maithripala Sirisena recently said that the parliament will be dissolved after the appointment of the Constitutional Council. However, three civil society members are yet to be named for the council.

The opposition handed over a no-confidence motion against Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe yesterday. The motion was signed by 112 MPs, one short of a simple majority.
