Elections, Police Commissions Vital Before Forthcoming Polls: Shiral Lakthilaka (AUDIO)

Coordinating Secretary to President Attorney-at-Law Shiral Lakthilaka said that the establishment of the independent Police Commission and independent Elections Commission is essential before the next general election.

In an exclusive interview with Asian Mirror, Lakthilaka said that the government has taken steps to achieve most of the main promises it had made, namely, reducing presidential powers, electoral reforms and establishment of independent commissions.

Meanwhile, many procedural laws pertaining to these structural laws are yet to be passed, he pointed out. These include Right to Information law, National Audit law and Code of Ethics, he said.

Furthermore, Lakthilaka added that it is vital to bring in electoral reforms within this parliament. Achieving the necessary two thirds majority could be difficult in the next parliament, he pointed out.
